Claude Westfall, Ph.D.
Dr. Westfall joined the Swinney Conservatory of Music in 2008 as Director of Choral Activities and an assistant professor of music. He directs the conservatory's choral program and teaches academic music courses.
Dr. Westfall has 27 years of experience teaching in Missouri Public Schools and has been a teaching assistant for four years at the University of Missouri-Columbia. His ensembles have performed at state and national conventions and have traveled extensively, performing in Germany, Austria and Italy.
Among the secondary schools Dr. Westfall has served as director of choral activities or music are Hickman High school in Columbia (half time), 2006-2007; Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, 1991-2004; Boone County R-VI High School in Centralia, 1983-1991; and Lebanon Junior High School, 1977-1982.
Dr. Westfall earned his bachelor's degree in vocal and instrumental music at Southwest Baptist University and a master's degree in education and choral conducting at Missouri State University. He completed his doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction/music education with an emphasis in choral conducting from the University of Missouri-Columbia in the summer of 2008.
Dr. Westfall has been the recipient of numerous honors. In 1997 he received the John Schnell Faculty Dedication Award. In 1998 he was given "USA Today's" All Teacher Academic Award for contributions to the Advancement of Music Education. In 2005 he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Missouri State University. In 2006 and 2007 he was recognized for his excellence in teaching at the University of Missouri.
Dr. Westfall is active as a clinician and conductor for district and regional choirs. His co-authored research has appeared in the "MENC Journal of Research in Music Education." He is an active member of Missouri Music Educators Association, National Association of Music Educators, College Music Society, Missouri Choral Directors Association and American Choral Music Association.
Westfall and his wife, Diana Westfall, and their three children live in Columbia.
