John D. Perkins, D.M.A.

PerkinsDr. John D. Perkins is Associate Professor of Music at Central Methodist University where he teaches applied trumpet and horn, coaches brass ensembles, and teaches music history. Perkins earned degrees from The University of Texas at Austin (D.M.A.), The University of Wisconsin - Madison (M.M.), and St. Cloud State University (B.S.). His primary teachers include Raymond Crisara, Albert Moore, and John Aley, and he studied briefly with Frank Kaderabek and Don Jacoby.

Perkins has held trumpet positions and performed with a multitude of orchestras, most recently with the Missouri Symphony Orchestra, the Columbia Civic Orchestra, and the 9th Street Philharmonic. He recently held the principal trumpet position with the Shippensburg Festival Symphony Orchestra for fifteen years. Repertoire performed in its entirety included Musorgky Pictures at an Exhibition, Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, Strauss Death and Transfiguration, Stravinsky Firebird Suite, Dvorak Symphony Nos. 6, 8 and 9, Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra, Beethoven Symphony Nos. 3, 5, and 7, Bernstein Symphony No. 2 and Chichester Psalms, Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, Ives Circus Band, Mendelssohn Symphony No. 3, Copland Old American Songs, and Brahms Symphony No. 1 to name a few.

Performing frequently for the Odyssey Chamber Music series, Perkins recently played Stravinsky L' histoire du soldat, Berg Chamber Concerto, and Martinu Le Revue de Cuisine. He also plays lead trumpet for MU's Summer Rep Theatre productions, Stephens College musicals, the Big Bang Brass Quintet, as well as solo engagements. He has performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference and has several recording reviews articles published in the International Trumpet Guild Journal.

Perkins's applied CMU students have won the Collegiate Brass – Upper Division category at the Missouri Music Teachers Association competition. They have also garnered honorable mention. His students are consistent featured soloists with the CMU Concert Band, and his brass ensembles perform repeatedly on instrumental concerts as well as on choir concerts and tours. Under his direction, the CMU Trumpet Ensemble was selected and performed at the 2014 International Trumpet Guild Conference at King of Prussia, PA.

Also enjoying working with a younger clientele, Perkins conducts clinics to regional middle and high school trumpet and horn students and he directs the trumpet clinics for the CMU Invitational Brass Conference. He adjudicates frequently at solo and ensemble contests.
