Library Services for Distance Learners
Gaining access to library or research materials can be difficult for students in distance learning programs. Below are some services and tips for getting access to the resources that might be needed.
Accessing Library Resources Tutorial- a PowerPoint tutorial for accessing print and electronic resources located an CMU.
Accessing Print Library Resources - All materials located in Smiley Library are available for request through the MOBIUS Pickup Anywhere service. This allows students to request books through MOBIUS with their CMU ID number and have them delivered to the closest drop off location to their residence. For further assistance, or to locate the nearest MOBIUS drop off point, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. Students can also use interlibrary loan to have materials NOT available in the MOBIUS catalog shipped to them directly. Simply use the form located here, and follow the directions to request materials.
Accessing Electronic Library Resources - Distance students and faculty have access to all of the electronic resources available through the library. Databases are available through the "Library Resources" link on the CMU homepage or MyCMU. To use remote access, users will be asked to login with their MyCMU ID and password. Databases, catalogs, web, and Subject Guides are linked from the library homepage.
Library Instruction - Faculty can request a library instruction session for any course. Topics generally include a basic introduction to the library's services and resources, including the online catalog and relevant electronic databases. The sessions meet the specific needs of the students and faculty, depending upon the course's research topics and class format. Online classroom instruction can include, but is not limited to, chat sessions, discussion group correspondence, individual email consultations, pathfinders, online tutorials and how-to guides. Some examples can be found under "Subject Guides".
