WORK STUDY

The work study program at CMU is a great opportunity for students. By working on campus, students not only earn money to assist with expenses, but have the chance to build relationships with faculty, staff, and other student workers. On-campus work study may provide experience to include on a resume, someone to provide a future recommendation, and the opportunity to develop connections at the university that can last a lifetime.

There are a limited number of work study positions available, and there are no guarantees that a student will actually be selected for a work study position. There are two types of work study: Federal Work Study and CMU Work Study - some positions require students be eligible for Federal Work Study.

Check out our video Guide to Handshake and see how to get started with Handshake. Follow this guide to make sure your Handshake account is complete. Not following directions will diminish your ability to apply for student employment.

All work study jobs are listed through Handshake (job posting system) beginning August 2. By opening the system on a specific date, we ensure that new students have an equal opportunity to apply for a campus position. Before August 2, new students cannot access the job posting system until they receive their CMU credentials which will allow them to log on to Handshake. Students must apply for work study annually.

Watch our video Guide to Applying for Work Study for assistance in the process.

All jobs on campus require a resume and cover letter. Make sure to read over our Resume and Cover letter tips, and to look at our Resume and Cover letter samples.

Also, please take time to review the Work Study Guidelines and Process Map.
