Academic Veteran Student Advisor

GENERAL SUMMARY

This position is responsible for advising Veteran students and processing VA student certifications.  He/she will be the main point of contact from Admission to CMU thru Graduation for Veteran students and will regularly meet with Veteran students to provide advising and assistance with VA educational benefits.  

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Meet with Veteran students at Admission and each term to provide advising and disclosures (25%)

Ensure certified hours meet eligibility requirements set forth by the US Department of Veteran Affairs before certifying hours within VA-ONCE portal (25%)

Maintain Veteran student files per VA requirements (10%)

Monitor changes in enrollment and degree progression of VA students and submit changes in VA-ONCE (10%)

Provide documentation to Department of Veteran Affairs for compliance surveys and audits (15%)

Participate in Department of Veteran Affairs training sessions and stay up-to-date on US Department of Veteran Affairs guidelines (10%)

Other duties as assigned (5%) 

MANAGERIAL/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory responsibilities, but must be able to coordinate with several offices across campus to gather information to advise Veteran students.  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:         

Bachelor’s Degree required.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and have customer service experience.  VA Benefits and/or VA-ONCE experience is preferred. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Regularly required to sit for long periods of time, talk and hear. Regularly required to use hands and fingers to operate office equipment and reach with hands and arms.  Specific vision abilities required include close vision. Must work on a computer for extended periods of time.  Must lift, carry, and move a minimum of 10 pounds on an occasional basis. 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

Must have excellent organizational skills, ability to work collaboratively with others, and the ability to multi-task.

Occasional night and/or weekend work may be necessary
