Sexual Assault

If you are a victim of sexual assault, the first priority should be to get to a safe and secure place and obtain the necessary medical treatment. It is strongly recommended that a victim of sexual assault report the incident in a timely manner, as time is a critical factor for evidence collection and preservation. A report should be submitted directly to Campus Safety (660-202-0848) and/or the Fayette Police Department. Filing a police report does not obligate you to prosecute, nor will it subject you to scrutiny or judgmental opinions.

Filing a police report will:

  • Ensure you receive the necessary medical treatment and tests.
  • Provide the opportunity for collection of evidence helpful in prosecution, which cannot be obtained later (a victim of sexual assault should not wash, douche, use the toilet, or change clothing prior to medical/legal exam).
  • Assure you have access to free confidential counseling from counselors specifically trained in the area of sexual assault crisis intervention.
  • Student victims also have the option to change their on campus living situations after the alleged sexual assault, if such changes are available.

After a sexual assault is reported to Campus Safety (660-202-0848), the Fayette Police Department may be contacted. Sex offenses are investigated by the Fayette Police Department in accordance to state law. The Associate Dean of Students shall be notified if the victim is a student. The student victim of a sexual assault may choose for the investigation to be pursued through the criminal justice system or the campus disciplinary process.

A representative of CMU will guide the victim through the available options and support the victim in his or her decisions. Counseling options will be made available through the counseling center.
