Tornado Procedures

If indoors:

  1. Go to the lowest level of the building. Do not use elevators to descend to the lower levels.
  2. Stay away from windows and doors with glass panes.
  3. Sit or crouch in an inner hallway or room as these locations are preferable.

If outdoors

  1. Seek shelter in the nearest building if possible:
    1. Go to the lowest level of the building. Do not use elevators to descend to the lowest levels.
    2. Stay away from windows and doors with glass panes.
    3. Sit or crouch in an inner hallway or room as these locations are preferable.
  2. If nearby shelter isn't available, go to the nearest ditch or depression, away from power lines, buildings, and trees. Do not stay in a vehicle or attempt to outrun a tornado.

After the tornado has passed, evaluate the situation, and if emergency help is needed, call 911.

Be aware of dangerous structural conditions. Report damaged facilities to Plant Operations (660-248-6295). NOTE: Gas leaks and power failures create special hazards. Do not light a match or smoke.

Follow all instructions from CMU officials or emergency personnel.
